The Point of Music

I've noticed that a lot of my friends and family listen to music where the whole point of the song is the vocals, whereas I tend to listen to music where the lyrics aren't as important as other musical elements. Even when we're listening listening to the same music, my ears tend to skip past the vocals to focus on the backgrounds more than the non-musicians in my life. I don't think either way of listening is inherently better, but I do find it interesting that different elements of a song are more interesting to me than to other people.
